Reunited

Reunited: Ed Byrne interview

Sunday Mercury.net carries an interesting interview with Ed Byrne who mentions the BBC pilot Reunited. Read the whole interview on the website.

The Irishman has enjoyed success as a comic actor as well as a stand-up comedian. He starred in last year’s drama pilot Reunited, by Solihull-born writer Mike Bullen. The ensemble drama, also featuring Joseph Millson, Zoe Tapper and Jemima Rooper, was hailed as an attempt to find the new Cold Feet. But it vanished as swiftly as it had appeared.

Ed says: “We were all a bit annoyed about it. We made the pilot, expecting them to decide whether to make a series, but they just decided to show the pilot at very short notice. It didn’t even make the Radio Times. “So no-one knew to watch it, it got low ratings and they’re not making a series. “It is mean to people that watched it, as it does leave you hanging and wondering what’s going to happen next.

“It’s a shame. I have been talking to Mike Bullen about coming up with something ourselves, though, so all may not be lost.”

Reunited: not commissioned?

I  just spotted a tweet from Ed Byrne from 21st July announcing that the BBC decided not to commission a series of Reunited.

Finding our lost tortoise makes up for the news that BBC1 have decided not to commission a series of "Reunited", that thing I acted in.

Reunited: more online reviews

I found 4 more critic and blog reviews which wouldn't mind seeing a series made of Reunited.

The Observer

This pilot will probably win a proper commission, which wouldn't be a bad thing. It wasn't badly written (by Cold Feet's Mike Bullen); some fine lines, plenty of frotting looks and the promise of much sex, and you can easily see the overall idea, which is This Life for the Facebook generation.

Sunday Mercury

It takes more than an attractive cast to make a hit drama, of course. I feel sorry for Mike because he is never likely to match the success he had with Cold Feet, and sadly Reunited isn’t as good. But it was watchable and showed just enough promise to be given a series by the BBC, though, given the complete lack of promotion it received, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

In The News

Reunited shows promise. It was certainly far more enjoyable than the first episode of ITV's recent failed series Married Single Other. People may say Cold Feet is over-rated but it has been seven years since it ended and nothing has captured the British public's heart in the same way that James Nesbitt, Helen Baxendale and John Thomson did for five years on Sunday nights. Whilst I doubt that Bullen's latest vehicle will be anywhere near as influential, it would be nice to see a full series playout. Hopefully we will be Reunited soon.

Blog

Without spoiling exactly what happens in the rest of the episode, just take the best attributes from Teachers, This Life and Cold Feet and you basically have Reunited, which is no bad thing as television has lost it’s way with drama’s like these of late. .....So it’s down to the BBC to give the British public content such as Reunited, which we can all watch and enjoy without having to think too hard. So it’s with this that I say i’d quite like it if they made a series of this. Ed Byrne plays his role well, there’s sex, drugs, infidelity, humour and decent music in there and it’s been years since Coupling, so I think we deserve a posher, sexed-up, dramatic version today.

Reunited: viewing figures

Digital Spy have publised last night's viewing figures.

New BBC comedy drama Reunited was watched by just over 3.3m on Wednesday evening, according to overnight viewing figures. The 60-minute comedy pilot, which was created by the writer of Cold Feet and Life Begins, averaged 3.33m (15.3%) for BBC One from 9pm.

However, the programme was beaten in the 9pm hour by an episode of Midsomer Murders, which took 3.71m (17.4%) for ITV1 between 8pm and 10pm.
