Love Never Dies: standing ovation reported

The Belfast Telegraph reports the standing ovation at tonight's Love Never Dies premiere.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and stars of Love Never Dies have received a standing ovation at the world premiere of the stage musical.

The eagerly-anticipated follow-up to The Phantom of the Opera took place at London's Adelphi Theatre, and is due to be followed by unveilings in New York and Australia.

The audience, packed with stars including Sir Michael Caine, Lord Bragg, Graham Norton, Gerard Butler, Sir Terry Wogan and Chris Evans, rose to their feet and cheered as the show reached its climax.

Lloyd Webber bowed and blew a kiss to the audience, and kissed those on the stage.

The Stage posts a reasonable review also.

As the show opens this week, the question on everyone’s lips is whether Lloyd Webber has pulled it off. The answer is yes, on the whole...

...Musically, it is pleasing enough, featuring a coherent mix of light opera, vaudeville and occasional rock, with numbers such as ‘Til I Hear You Sing and Love Never Dies standing out. The latter was originally used in The Beautiful Game, but was always intended for a Phantom sequel, according to the composer. Some questioned this decision, but hearing it performed in its new context, one can wholly appreciate why it was done. Quite simply, it works.
