The Priory

The Priory: wins Olivier award

The Priory by Michael Wynne has won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy this evening, fighting off competition from Calendar Girls by Tim Firth, England People Very Nice by Richard Bean and Jez Butterworth’s Parlour Song to take home the coveted award.

The Priory: Olivier Award noms

The Priory has been nominated has been nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award in the best new comedy category. The Olivier Awards will take place on 21 March 2010.

Not sure if this article has been posted before from reviewer Matt Wolf summing up the 2009 theatre season, and specifically Every Good Boy Deserves Favour.

Joseph Millson made the first of three splendid theater appearances across the year as a political prisoner who allows himself to be broken down in front of his young son.

Joseph was in four stage productions last year - I assume the reviewer didn't count / see The Fairy Queen.

The Priory: Variety review

Good review in Variety

But if the conceit is unoriginal, its familiarity works to the comedy's advantage. Fairly hopeless Kate (Jessica Hynes), who has organized the gathering at a renovated priory in the middle of nowhere, observes to architect Daniel (pin-sharp Joseph Millson) that this isn't going to be a big drunken party: "A few friends. People we like. No craziness." But her statement clearly is so far off the mark, it sets up an amused ripple of anticipation.

While The Independent can't recommend it highly enough.

The critics have been slightly sniffy about this production (too much fun: not enough substance is the subtext) but this is the very best sort of adult pantomime. You laugh, you cry, you scream. (There's definitely something behind you, and it's wearing a dark hood.)

Where else are you going to see a play where a Bafta-winning head of Children's BBC TV gets off her head on valium and cocaine. And, frankly, you're on her side.
